Worst Railroad Accident in West Texas History

Nov. 27, 1946 - Four of five runaways from the Abilene State Hospital for Epileptics were killed in a train derailment a mile east of Loraine (about 60 miles west of Abilene). The runaways, who had hopped the Texas & Pacific freight train in Abilene, were pinned beneath tons of steel and their bodies scorched by flaming gasoline. Twenty-seven cars of the 57-car train derailed. New pickups, refrigerators, bicycles, pipes, tractors, beans, beer, whiskey and gasoline were destroyed. It was called the worst rail accident in West Texas history, and may still be.
