Monahans mystery

Post by dhogan »

T&P public timetable---November 1948 (the one showing a streamlined Eagle train stopped at the fictitious Eagleville):
Why did trains 7 & 8, the Southerner originate and terminate at Monahans?

Same trains: A dining lounge car operated between Sweetwater and Monahans.

Same train: A through Dallas-Lubbock sleeping car was operated over the P&SF (Santa Fe). How did the transfer occur at Sweetwater? Any details?

Prior to WWII the through Pullman via P&SF ran to Amarillo. The service included head end and chair cars. Two sets of through equipment were required and the two railroads provided one each.
The Pullmans and chair cars ceased running through in 1950, but a mail storage car continued into the Sixties. This service involed cars from T&P, MP, PRR, and NYC. Reports of B&O cars have not been verified.
The Santa Fe's original depot was just a few hundred yards from the T&P's. Remains of the transfer tracks can be seen beneath the US 80 bridge.
