Handwritten text under the photo says, "Fort Worth, Texas Jan, 1889 - Hand pumps were once used to provide air pressure for testing brakes in yards and car shops. This device was an important piece of equipment in railroad terminals for many years. The photo shows Mr. William Schmalzried, former Supt. of the Car Dept."
